Pediatric Dentistry
Dynamic Dental strives to be South Calgary’s premier destination for optimal oral health for the whole family. To ensure your best dental health throughout life, it is important to establish good oral hygiene habits from a young age. We recommend children have their first dental appointment after their first birthday. At Dynamic Dental it is our belief that familiarizing children with the dental office early, and having a positive experience, will greatly decrease the incidence of dental phobias in the next generation and help ensure their teeth are healthy from day one! We will provide the ideal atmosphere for introducing your child to the dentist’s office, and will teach and educate them on preventative care and will encourage them to continue with regular hygiene and dental check-ups. Dynamic Dental will help assist children of various anxiety levels to complete their dental treatment in a caring, gentle and friendly manner that will set them on the path to building a trusting relationship with our dental team.
Also nothing spells positive experience like a visit to our toy chest. We put special care into making sure our toy chest is stocked with fun toys to reward our young patients with. We hope to have the opportunity to show your children that a trip to the dentist can be educational and fun!

Why Baby teeth are important
The first baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, usually appear between the ages of 6 months to one year of age. In some cases, the teeth may appear much earlier, or much later. It`s important to keep in mind that the timing of when they appear in the mouth is less important than the order the baby teeth develop. Usually all 20 primary teeth (baby teeth) will usually erupt by the age of three. And those baby teeth are important, even if you can’t see them and even if they eventually fall out and are replaced with permanent adult teeth. Baby teeth are in fact, extremely important.
Baby teeth:
- Help children chew food easily and properly
- Help children speak more quickly and clearly
- Hold space in the jaws for permanent teeth that are growing under the gums
- Set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles
Baby teeth are also just as prone to cavities as adult teeth. In fact, more than 50 percent of children will be affected by tooth decay before the age five.* So you want to keep those cavities away to avoid an early loss of a tooth. When a baby tooth is lost too early, the permanent teeth can drift into the empty space and make it difficult for other adult teeth to find room when it’s their turn to erupt (often requiring orthodontics/braces to correct). So, proper oral hygiene is important as soon as your baby is born. Establishing good oral habits early will go a long way, even beyond impressing the tooth fairy!
Sealants
Our view on sealants is based on research. A sealant is a clever way to help prevent tooth decay in some of the most vulnerable areas of teeth. It is meant to protect the pits and fissures of molar teeth during a child’s formative years. Research has shown that a sealant should be placed as soon as a molar has fully erupted through the gums, and before the tooth comes into contact with its opposing tooth (before it can be chewed on). If the tooth has not fully broken through the gums, saliva secreted by the gums can affect the bond of the sealant. And if the molar is being used to chew with, small food particles can get crushed into the grooves, bringing bacteria with it. Placing sealant over the bacteria can lead to a cavity that can go undetected for years. Ask us to explain the difference between a sealant and preventive resin restoration (can be placed at any time).

Orthodontics
It was previously common to wait until all the permanent teeth have erupted before considering orthodontics. That thinking has changed drastically, as we now realize the benefit of early treatment in both airway development and palatal expansion. We work with a progressive orthodontic office that seeks to promote airway development (when indicated) and prevent unnecessary tooth loss.
Pediatric Dental Specialist
For children with a lot of necessary treatment, where a deeper form of sedation would likely be needed, we may recommend a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. We work with a number of specialists, and although we strive to treat all our patients at Dynamic Dental, there may be certain situations where it is recommended to see a specialist.
